Quran Tafsir explained and its importance

The Quran is a concise book with deep spiritual meaning and timeless guidance for every generation. Understanding its full depth, wisdom, and context requires more than reading the text. The Quran can fully be understood through Tafsir (exegesis). It is a key to unlock the true meaning behind the verses.

In this blog, we will explore what tafsir means and why we need the Tafseer Quran.

What Is Quran Tafsir

Tafsir is derived from an Arabic word ‘fassara’ which means ‘to explain or clarify.’ In Islamic terminology, Tafsir refers to the scholarly interpretation and explanation of the Quran. It is intended to uncover the context, meanings, rulings, and messages of verses of the Quran.

The Quran says:

“And We have sent down to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them…”

(Surah An-Nahl 16:44)

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was the first Mufassir of the Quran (one who explains the Quran). Since then, scholars have continued this tradition using various methodologies of interpreting the Quran.

Types of Tafsir

The Quran tafsir has two main categories: Tafsir bil Mathur and Tafsir bir ra’y. These are the methods of explaining the Quran in different ways.

Tafsir bil Ma’thur (Tafsir by Transmission)

Tafsir bil Ma’thur explanation

Tafsir bil-Mathur or Tafsir bil-Riwayah is a method of interpreting the Quran based on established textual sources, such as the Quran itself, Sunnah, and the interpretations of companions and their successors. It emphasizes using these established narratives to explain Quranic verses. This way of tafseer ensures a connection to the original meaning as understood by early Islamic scholars.

Tafsir of Quran by Quran

The primary source for understanding the Quran is the Quran itself. The verses of the Quran are interpreted by other verses that clarify, elaborate, or provide context.

Tafsir Quran by Sunnah

The Prophet (PBUH) was the first and foremost interpreter of the Quran. The life of the Holy Prophet (SAW) is the explanation of the divine revelation. The sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) serve as the main source for understanding the Quran.

Quran Tafsir by Companions (Sahaba)

The interpretations and understandings of the companions of the Prophet (SAW) are the source of Quran exegesis. Those who witnessed the revelation of verses and were closest to Him are considered highly reliable sources.

Quarn Tafsir by Successors (Tabi’un)

The generation following the companions also holds significant weight in Tafsir bil-Mathur. They learned the Quran and its interpretation directly from the companions of the Prophet (PBUH)

Tafsir bil Ra’y (Tafsir by Reasoning)

Tafsir bil-ray is a method of interpreting the Quran that relies on personal reasoning and independent judgment (ijtihad). It does not solely rely on traditional narrations.

“Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?”

(Surah Muhammad 47:24)

Conditions for Tafsir bil-Ra’y

  • The interpreter of the Quran must have sincere intentions and sound intellect.
  • The Mufassir must be professional in the Arabic Language, Islamic jurisprudence, and Quranic sciences.
  • There should be no personal biases, philosophical shifts in context, or use of unverified narratives.

Why We Need Tafsir

Tafsir Quran is vital for understanding the true meaning and context of the Quranic verses. It helps Muslims to apply Quranic teachings in their daily lives and deepen their connection with Allah. Quran Tafsir clarifies ambiguous verses, provides their historical context, and bridges the gap between divine revelation and human comprehension.

Why we need Tafsir of the Quran

To Understand the Context (Asbab al-Nuzul)

The Quran verses have different contexts of revelation based on conditions and circumstances. The Quranic exegesis plays an important role in understanding the context of the Quranic verses. By examining the circumstances surrounding the revelation of a verse, Asbab al-Nuzul provides a deeper understanding of the context. It helps to prevent misinterpretations of the verses and ensure they are applied correctly.

“Indeed, we have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may understand.”

(Surah Yusuf 12:2)

To Grasp the Deeper Meaning

There are different kinds of verses in the Quran. Some verses are clear in meaning, while others are concise and ambiguous with hidden meanings. The Quran Tafseer helps differentiate and interpret them correctly. It assists the interpreters and readers to get the true and deeper meaning of the verses.

“He is the One Who has revealed to you the Book. Some of its verses are clear… while others are ambiguous.” (Surah Aal Imran 3:7)

To Prevent Misinterpretation

Arabic is a diverse language. To understand it, one must be well-versed in the language and its usage. Common Quran readers can misunderstand the verses. Therefore, Tafsir is important to prevent the misinterpretation of the message and commandments of Allah. Tafsir of the Quran acts as a safeguard against extremism, cultural biases, or incorrect beliefs.

“And none will grasp its message except people of understanding.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:269)

To Strengthen Faith and Spirituality

Understanding the meaning and messages of the Quranic verses leads believers in the right direction. Those who get the meaning and act upon it wholeheartedly strengthen their faith and spirituality. Understanding the Quran through Tafseer brings peace, hope, and blessings to life.

“This is a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses…(Surah Sad 38:29)
