Meaning of Ayat

Types of Ayahs in the Quran

Muhkamat Ayats 

Muhkamat Ayats are those verses whose meaning and message are clear and easy to understand. They are clear ayats. For example, the verses related to prohibitions and laws. 

Mutashabihat Ayats

Mutashabihat ayats are those verses whose meanings are not clear. They require interpretations. Their meanings are metaphorical or hidden. They are Allegorical Ayats.

As Allah mentions in the Holy Quran;
“He is the One Who has revealed to you (O Prophet) the Book, of which some verses are precise—they are the foundation of the Book while others are elusive” (Surah Aal-e-Imran:7)

Ayat-e-Ahkam

Ayat-e-Ahkam are the legal verses that form the basis of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh). There are around 500 Ayat Ahkam in the Quran. 

Ayat-e-Kawniyah

Ayat-e-Kawniyah are verses that refer to the signs in nature and the universe. They point to Allah’s existence and power. The holy Quran states;

“And one of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your languages and colours. Surely in this are signs for those of sound knowledge.” (Surah Ar-Rum:22)

How Many Ayats are There in the Quran 

There are 6,236 Ayats in the standard version of the Quran. It excludes Bismillah, which appears at the beginning of every Surah except Surah At-Tawbah. These Ayats are distributed across 114 chapters of the Quran. 

Out of these 6,236 verses, 4725 Ayats are Makki (which are revealed in Makkah) and 1511 are Madani Ayats (which are revealed in Madinah). 

Structure and Composition of Ayats of the Quran

Each Ayah in the Quran varies in length. Some are just a few words long, and others consist of multiple lines. This variation underlines the depth and diversity of the Quranic message.

  • Short Ayats appear in the earlier revelations of the Quran, mostly in the Makki Surahs. These are characterized by powerful and rhythmic prose.
  • Longer Ayats appear in the Madni Surahs. These verses deal with the detailed laws, ethics, and social guidance.

Every verse in the Quran is numbered and separated by a small symbol. The symbol is usually presented by a small circle the number is written inside it.

The holy Quran mentions;

Those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort. (Ar-Ra’d: 28

Moral and Social Instruction

Allah Almighty emphasizes morality and justice through His book. The Quranic ayats guide human behavior, compassion, and accountability. Allah says in the Quran;

“Indeed, Allah commands justice, grace, as well as generosity to close relatives. He forbids indecency, wickedness, and aggression. He instructs you, so perhaps you will be mindful.” (Surah An-Nahl:90

Legislative Rulings

The Quran is a code of life. Its ayats are composed of detailed laws related to commerce, marriage, inheritance, and other legal and social issues. 

“O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate from justice.” (Surah Al Nisa :135)
